BMW 6 Series 640 Coupe: Dynamic yet subtle
I was not sure what to expect when I took delivery of the BMW 640 Coupe shortly after having driving the magnificent BMW 7 Series. I was in two minds as to the relevance of the 640 Coupe as the 7 Series fills the top end of the premium luxury market so well.
The new BMW 6 Series model range cements its status as a gold standard for sports performance, luxurious driving pleasure and distinctive aesthetics in the luxury segment. What further sets it apart is the fact that it comes in three models, being the new BMW 6 Series Convertible, new BMW 6 Series Coupe and new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. They all display vivid expressions of sports performance and design elegance, efficiency, exclusivity and innovation.
Even with the BMW 640 Coupe performance is sporty and enhanced without losing any of its elegance through its new front design and kidney grill and apron. The rear end looks as attractive as the front with the rear apron that accentuates the width of the body, as well as the car’s power and solidity; larger tailpipe embellishers for all six-cylinder models.
Night driving was an experience as the newly developed full-LED headlights exude a sophisticated aura and are now fitted as standard. Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant available as an option was fitted to my test car and the difference this makes is worth the cost.
Although my BMW640 was white, which I prefer, the new Jatoba metallic, Cashmere Silver metallic, Glacier Silver metallic, Mediterranean Blue metallic and Melbourne Red metallic paintwork finishes add renewed freshness to the BMW 6 Series. Newly developed 20-inch light-alloy wheels in exclusive multi-spoke design available as an option to round of an already exciting looking car.
BMW interiors never has surprises but offers an exclusive ambience and new high-quality surfaces; bi-colour leather trim now available as an option. The interior is luxurious well laid out, functional and without compromise to quality, functionality and comfort.
Introduction of the Design Pure Experience and Design Pure Excellence equipment lines shines a particularly bright spotlight on the sporty / luxurious facets of the new BMW 6 Series and an extended range of BMW Individual options are also available.
Engine derivatives that are available includes six-cylinder in-line and V8 engines with BMW Twin Power Turbo technology. The 640 diesel engine is powerful and also delivers a subdued sound that is not as dramatic as engine soundtrack of the petrol derivatives thanks to a standard-fitted sports exhaust system with switchable flap.
Sports performance and ride comfort made-to-measure is the rule even with the BMW 640 as it also sports Dynamic Damper Control, Adaptive Drive and Integral Active Steering.
Connected Drive navigation package fitted as standard and makes any trip just so much enjoyable.
The latest-generation BMW Head-Up Display promotes concentration on the road ahead and once you are accustomed to this you really don’t want to go without it. Concierge Service personal information service via a SIM card embedded in the car provides exclusive levels of convenience on the move.
Driving Assistant Plus breaks new ground in safety and keeps track with the latest development in safety features that are now as essential as ever.
I found the BMW 6 Series 640 very underrated and would park it in my garage just as easily as I will do the BMW 7 Series.
