VW Polo R-Line Small but dynamic
Volkswagen has recently added the VW Polo 1.0 TSi model to its range.
I had the opportunity to really test one of Volkswagen’s best-selling Polo models in the range over a one week period.
Firstly I was amazed that I got the VW Polo 81kW 1.0TSi Sporty R-Line with 7-speed DSG transmission for the test. The R-Line is now standard to this model. Although I prefer the DSG 7 speed automated transmission I had my doubts as to the power delivery of the three cylinder engine.
The introduction of the 1.0 TSI engine is a precursor to Volkswagen’s small engine strategy in South Africa. The fuel efficient small capacity engines will be the main feature in Volkswagen’s future models. The three-cylinder 999cc engine will be the base engine of the new Golf which will be launched locally at the end of the second quarter.
The engine performance figures looks good on paper as the 1.0 TSI delivers 81kW of power at 5000rpm. Its maximum torque of 200Nm is available from 2000 up to 3500rpm. The sprint from 0 to 100km/h is reached in 9.3 seconds. It has a top speed of 197km/h. In every day driving this means that the little Polo keeps its own when accelerating and also at overtaking. I had more than adequate power going up on Old Kaapse Weg and never ran out of power.
What also impressed me with the Polo was its secure and precise handling characteristics on all road surfaces. The Polo also have very limited road and wind noise.
I did not reach the frugal combined fuel economy of 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres but averaged 5.7 litres per 100kilometres. The exceptional fuel efficiency is enhanced by the BlueMotion Technology with Stop/Start and battery regeneration systems.
R-Line Package which is now standard included the following equipment:
Exterior;
The R-Line package adds a sporty look which makes the car stands out on the road.
The R-Line package includes R-Line logo on the radiator grille, front and rear bumpers, sill extensions, a sporty rear diffuser with an integrated chrome exhaust tailpipe, a rear spoiler in body colour and 17-inch Serron alloy wheels.
Interior;
5-inch Composition Colour, Connectivity package with Bluetooth and USB as well as iPhone/iPod interface, fatigue detection, sport front seats with ‘Cell’ interior cloth and door trim, multifunction steering and front fog lights.
The model as tested also included the following optional features;
5.8-inch Composition media, App Connect, Light and Vision package (includes rain sensor wipers, auto-dimming interior mirror, automatic headlights and coming home function), cruise control, climatronic air-conditioner, panoramic sunroof, park distance control (front and rear), rear view camera and LED headlights with separate LED daytime running lights.
The interior is very well crafted with quality finishes and looks modern. I was impressed with the ease of connecting and quality sound of the blue tooth system. Seating is comfortable and hold its occupants well during cornering. Braking is excellent. Space in front is very good and the back is adequate for smaller persons.
I enjoyed the Polo 1.0 TSi Polo R-Line and believes it to be one of the best in its category, but when adding optional features it can be pricy, but then as with other VW products, it keeps its value.
The 1.0 TSI Polo R-line retails for R290 200 (VAT and emissions tax included).
The retail price includes 3 year/45 000km service plan, 3 year/120 000km warranty and a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty. Service Interval is 15 000km
