Sustainability Critical in Good Corporate Governance of the Future

Disempowerment is not just the lack of access to the means of financial well-being, it is a mindset that manifests itself in behaviour. Typically this includes waiting for instructions, not putting in maximum effort, not taking initiative, not being proactive, and blaming others for one’s own mistakes.

It is this mindset that needs to change but one cannot legislate a change of heart. Government has put in place wide-ranging legislation to bring about empowerment but regulations cannot empower poor people. The change needs to come from the inside out. It is widely accepted that significant entrepreneurial activity stimulates economic growth but South Africa’s entrepreneurial activity is predominantly of a survival kind, which does not achieve this. The occupational performance levels of the majority of emerging entrepreneurs is generally too low for the entrepreneurial demands they face.

Many community projects, faith-based services and NGOs in South Africa are passionately pursuing the empowerment of the poor, but are generally ignorant of how to move these people towards sustainability. In the end, the poorest of the poor are still poor ... and angry, while the rich are getting richer. BEE has given people a step up and opened doors, but it still does not deal with the dilemma of the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ - BEE executives simply joined the ranks of the ‘haves’. We can’t perpetuate this scenario! We have to put in collective effort, resources, intelligence and universal transformation tools. We need to generate powerful, lasting transformation based on tangible developmental principles, rather than implementing more programmes that most likely perpetuate dependency mindsets and keep people disempowered.

A human transformation model that is a development framework for socio-economic wholeness will combat misery and all that holds individuals back from being the authentic person they are created to be. It will encourage transformative relationships and transformative people handling skills, creating a community of both thinkers and do-ers. As we understand human limitations (caused by external threats and internal weaknesses) and have set of tools, guidelines and handling skills that enables the transformation of people who are passive, stuck and not sustainable, to grow self esteem and dignity, and move to higher greatness we can achieve real transformation. Those at higher levels (independent people, bosses and success chasers) also need transformation of their understanding to ensure that they become transformers themselves.

Such an approach holds great potential for entrepreneurship development and venture creation. The A2B™ model for human transformation is a revolutionary transformation thinking framework with pragmatic applications desperately needed by those who talk and write transformation, but have never understood HOW?
